Buying Poetry Books/Taste

I am an avid reader, and I have been since I was very young. My favorite author (fiction) has been Chuck Palahniuk, since I read my first of his books. As some of you may know, he has a...quirky, but dark undertone. I liked that I wasn't reading fluffy teenage romances, and that when I had to do a book report in English class, I got to speak about fake transsexuals who teach better life lessons than most young adult's mentors. But, as this class progresses I find myself reading a lot more poetry, and searching for new poets I would enjoy preferably something along the lines of Chuck's tone. Over this long weekend, I stumbled upon a used book sale, and I spotted the Walt Whitman book (or collection rather), "Leaves of Grass". For fifty cents, how could I not buy it? I picked it up, and skimmed through it before purchasing it, and I knew it was a good buy. I have a habit of highlighting my favorite quotes, and in this used book I discovered that there were red markings in it, showing the previous owners favorite parts. To my delight, I also loved the parts that were marked, it made my face glow. Although Whitman doesn't have that pessimistic feel, I still enjoyed his work. I will continue my search for what fits my taste, but I like that I'm trying different things in poetry than I have in the past with fiction.

  1. You really can't go wrong with Whitman, especially "Song of Myself," "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," and "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking."

And wait till you read Mayakovsky for next time!
