Handwrite It or Type It Out?

My notebook is simply... a mess. In class when I hear something I might want to write about later, I jot it down at the top of my page. I "illustrate" in the margins when I'm doing Muse work for inspiration. Brackets and parentheses are all out of order and it is driving me crazy! So, as of late, I have been transferring my "poetic wisdom" to my MacBook. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about poems written in original handwriting versus typed on a computer. My type-A personality says "type it out! It looks much more organized and sophisticated," but the poet in me says "Your audience learns who you are through your handwriting! Let them learn about you!" Seeing photographs during class of actual poems in their original form begins to make me wonder if we would look and poets and their work differently if we could see their handwriting. For example, in class we saw photographs of Emily Dickinson's original poetry on the back of old envelopes and coffee stained napkins. It shows that she wasn't very serious about getting her poetry published and that it was more of a talent and a hobby than anything else. How are you guys presenting your final notebook? What's your opinion? Let me know!

  1. I'm on the same page- kind of in between on this thought. I think our final copies should be typed out and organised, if for no other reason than to convey the "I'm serious about this class" mentality. Yet, I also feel that some poems' messages can be easily conveyed through handwriting- for example, your handwriting can change to further illustrate the mood of the poem. A poem from the perspective of a typical high school girl would be loopy and large, while from the mind of a mentally unstable patient would be sloppy and lopsided.
I also like your idea of illustrations and doodles. Maybe you could include those pages after the typed version, or even just leave the handwritten page in.
